In September, Canadian design studio Creative Matters expanded three of its already-outstanding collections – Vista, Vanguard and Arcadian – with 22 dazzling new rug designs.
Drawing inspiration from cityscapes and landscapes as well as mid-century modern aesthetics, the Vista rug collection is the first to be handmade in Afghanistan using the Persian knot technique in local Ghazni wool, a pure-white yarn that readily absorbs natural dyes. The six different patterns in the Vista rug collection from Creative Matters each have a rustic charm that is heightened by their sophisticated designs. Included in the expansion are both new patterns and colourways for existing motifs.
Referencing arial views of land with a mid-century twist, Acreage Chamomile draws the eye across its textured surface featuring 3-, 4- and 5-millimetre cut pile construction, with shifts in colour and shape creating a reimagined landscape. Layers of warm and sandy neutral tones bring focus to the geometric forms that comprise the pattern while a series of playful moss-green lines add another layer of interest.
Uncomplicated and somewhat asymmetrical, High Street Juniper brings a new warm-toned colourway to the existing pattern (previously only available in Ash). A composition of lines in varying thickness, details and tones, the rug plays up its variations in a beautiful way.
Skyline Terracotta from the Vista rug collection brings a new ruddy hue to the balanced field-like composition of overlapping rectangular and square forms. Tonal variations throughout lend the understated design a sense of depth and interest.
Summit Thistle and Summit Topaz are two variations of the same prismatic pattern, with Thistle offering a neutral and earthy palette of browns, sandy beige and stone grey for the graphic and captivating motif and Topaz brightening it up with shades of coral, turquoise, blue and grey.
Avenue Onyx has an architecturally inspired pattern, with a structured layout of lines that turn sharp corners and segment the surface into building-like arrangements.
