Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron developed the Volkshaus lounge series for ClassiCon with an asymmetrical design, which lends the sculptural furniture a fresh expression from every angle.
Inspired by traditional wooden joints used in Japanese architecture, the complex construction of the three furniture elements in the Volkshaus series – a lounge chair, stool and side table – results in an intersecting X-shaped frame that has strong graphic appeal.
Considered the defining and unifying feature of the series is the point where the CNC-cut wooden legs intersect and interlock: deceptively simple in appearance, the connection site came from a comprehensive research process by Herzog & de Meuron and is responsible for the sculptural character and architectural expression of the Volkshaus lounge series.
The chunky yet streamlined framework of both the Volkshaus lounge chair and stool is wrapped in a hard-wearing cord webbing to create comfortable and supportive seat and back (on the chair); the weaving of the slightly elastic cord lends the furniture a degree of lightness and transparency. With the side table, the defining X-shape is framed between two circular surfaces with bevelled edges to form a compact companion piece to the seating.
Made from solid oak, the Volkshaus lounge series by Herzog & de Meuron is available in two finish options: a natural satin lacquer finish or a black-stained satin lacquer finish. Each version is complemented by a coordinating colour of cord: dark sage green cord for the natural oak and deep black cord for the black-painted oak. Optional colour-coordinated loose cushions can also be specified for the lounge chair.
The Volkshaus lounge series makes an inviting presence in private living spaces and is also suitable for use in waiting areas, lobbies or hotel rooms.
