Fulcrum Arts and Chapman University have collaborated to present Energy Fields: Vibrations of The Pacific, a part of Getty’s region-wide initiative PST ART: Art & Science Collide. Co-curated by Fulcrum Arts Executive Director Robert Takahashi Novak and Australian artist, musician, and curator Lawrence English, the exhibition is based on vibrations and their resulting waves — gravitational, tectonic, seismic, sound, and light. It recognizes the Pacific, the world’s most seismically active region, as a unique zone of entanglement between these energetic forces, and features a dynamic collection of works by artists from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Canada, and the United States – countries across four continents all connected by the Pacific Ocean.
Energy Fields: Vibrations of The Pacific is based on the concept of vibrations, and the belief that they are fundamental to science in understanding the nature of matter in the cosmos and on Earth, and are similarly a primary means through which human perception and experience might be understood. Using knowledge and inspiration from various anthropological and scientific discoveries, the exhibition is a porous exploration of shared concepts and visions from across the Pacific. The exhibition features large-scale and interactive architecture-adjacent artworks by numerous popular artists, with each piece displaying varied approaches to understanding the implications of vibration.
