Vogtech Renewables is seeking a Sustainable Building Architect to join their office in Ottawa, Ontario.
Vogtech specializes in consulting and solutions in the renewable energy sector for a variety of industries, including mining, steel, energy, and real estate, and is involved in all phases, from initial concept evaluation through construction and commissioning into operations, life extension and decommissioning. Accepted candidates can expect to assist the project manager in actively managing green building projects from concept design through to construction completion to ensure the sustainability targets are achieved.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Architecture technology or Architecture
- Understanding of Carbon Footprint concept & calculations and greenhouse emission calculations
- Architectural software programs with knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) and proficiency in AutoCAD
- Understanding of Heat pumps, steam turbine, Biomass, solar, PV, CHP, boilers, HVAC etc.
- Experience in energy, building services, utilities or similar fields
- Able to work under pressure
- Has attention to detail
- Client focus, organized team player with excellent oral communication skills
- Passion for developing your skills both professionally and personally, including the commitment to complete the appropriate professional registration in your field (Professional engineer designation)
- Excellent numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills along with the ability to communicate key points clearly and concisely for our customers in written reports, presentations, and meetings

Responsibilities:
- Consult with clients to determine the type, style and purpose of renovations or new building construction being considered
- Generate building plans and detailed drawings to be used by contractors and tradespersons
- Manage the coordination and overall integration of technical activities in architecture or engineering projects
- Negotiate contracts with clients with a focus on design, construction time, price, etc.
- Prepare documents showing both the structural needs and the materials required for construction
- Supervise the preparation of drawings, specifications and other construction documents for use by contractors and tradespersons
- Work in limiting factors, such as town planning laws and environmental impact assessments
- Conceptualize and design buildings and develop plans describing design specifications, building materials, costs and construction schedules
- Construction site supervision
- Prepare sketches and models
- Perform Life Cycle Analysis to determine the embodied emissions of buildings and identify opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint of the buildings
- Utilize BIM modelling and LCA software to produce embodied carbon results, in compliance with Zero Carbon Building, LEED®, Toronto Green Standard, or similar standards
- Review and assess emerging codes, standards and policies in industry and prepare summary briefs for teams and practice leaders to help shape company’s agenda on energy/carbon reduction
- Assist in the green building rating process for various institutional, commercial, and high-rise residential buildings
- Participate in integrated design meetings to facilitate sustainability solutions from a multi-disciplinary consulting team
- Review design and construction drawings to verify and document environmental performance
- Review construction materials disclosure data to assess life cycle carbon emissions
- Collect and track LEED®, WELL, Toronto Green Standard, Zero Carbon Building Standard, Energy Star Multifamily and other green building standard submittal documentation provided by the project team and review for completeness and accuracy
- Attend site meetings throughout the construction phase and perform site reviews as needed
- Review design and construction submissions and provide assistance during the green building certification process
- Undertake research and summarize findings on sustainability, energy, and carbon
