Can light become material? In the hands of Ichiro Iwasaki, it comes very close. The Japanese designer’s new lighting collection for Spanish manufacturer Vibia — his third for the brand — marries a signature restraint with the playful, often philosophical inquiry found in many of his pieces.
For the Flat series (which includes a broad range of tabletop and pendant fixtures as well as this suite of floor lamps), LED modules are carefully concealed in almost impossibly thin aluminum heads that cast a soft glow downward, transforming their polycarbonate diffusers and steel supports into illuminated planes of light.
It’s available in a range of heights with single or double metal pans; the 43-centimetre-tall version is fitted with a circular plate that doubles as a side table, while the 96- and 100-centimetre-tall iterations feature two distinct shade profiles on an identical perpendicular base.
