Public Art at Hammock Playground

The Underline, is pleased to announce a call to artists for public art at Hammock Playground. They seek preliminary proposals for two temporary murals for the newly inaugurated and nature-inspired playground directly adjacent to Simpson Park, Miami’s only preserved native Hardwood Hammock environmental ecosystem in downtown Miami. The murals are intended to be on view for at least a year.

The murals will contribute to the vision of The Underline as a 10-mile public art destination, urban trail, and linear park. In a future phase, community events and activities, as proposed by artists, will be planned around the murals and The Underline’s new Hammock Playground to bring attention to the “Power of Art and Play” and foster maximum engagement with the community, especially families. This open call encourages emerging and established South Florida-based artists to create artworks that foster meaningful dialogue around art, nature, and play and invite local communities to connect with each other and the environment. Artists from all backgrounds are welcome to apply. Projects incorporating a range of media and interdisciplinary practices are highly encouraged.

Selection Process:

The Underline’s Art Advisory Council (UAAC) will review and select the artworks in conjunction with the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Art in Public Places Program Professional Advisory Committee, and Trust. The UAAC council will carry out the vision of its Public Art Master Plan by incorporating installations from emerging, mid-career, and established artists who push the boundaries of art and impact. This panel will review submissions based on their artistic merit, alignment with the project’s goals and pillars, and ability to engage the local community.

Eligibility:

  • Open to professional visual artists based in South Florida

Awards:

  • Up to $30,000 to use per mural
