Jute pendant light by Vij5

At her Rotterdam-based studio Atelier LVDW, product designer Laura van de Wijdeven undertakes materials research with the aim of using organic waste streams and bio-based matter to develop new sustainable materials. With the Jute pendant light for Dutch design brand Vij5, she developed a composite made from 50 per cent recycled jute fibres and 50 per cent porcelain plaster.

The jute is reclaimed from flooring manufacturer Forbo’s factory in the form of fluff – the natural fibre is the only waste material resulting from the company’s linoleum and this repurposing makes the flooring a zero-waste product.

First tinted with natural dyes like indigo, turmeric and red ochre, the fluff is then combined with plaster (an endlessly recyclable material) to form the durable yet delicate-looking plaster composite, with the jute reinforcing the plaster and the colouration creating unique painterly like patterns.
