British rug studio Sonya Winner has collaborated with American architect Kevin McClellan to create the vividly captivating Sedona rug series, a two-rug collection inspired by the Arizona canyons that the series is named for.
With the Sedona rug series, artist and colourist Sonya Winner – who founded her eponymous rug studio in 2009 – and architect Kevin McClellan have translated the area’s renowned rock formations, iconic vistas and vibrant natural hues into two distinct yet complementary rugs that are characterized by sculptural flowering layers in intense and nuanced colourways.
Spectacularly capturing the earthy red and orange tones that permeate the area’s sandstone rocks and the mesmerizing azure tones of the wide sky above, the Sedona rug series reference both McClellan’s architectural background and Winner’s signature use of colour transparency.
Utilizing a novel perspective on form and space, McClellan invited an interplay between colours and lines that reflect Sedona’s natural landscape, which were refined by Winner through colour saturation and an affinity for irregular, rhythmic compositions and organic shapes.
The results are two rugs – one square and one irregular in shape – that are highly nuanced and show-stopping. The Sedona series rugs are assembled in sculptural layers that unit movement and structure and push the boundaries of traditional rug-making techniques and hand-carving.
Made from pure New Zealand wool (which is natural and sustainable), each rug in the Sedona series is hand-crafted by a small team of skillful artisans in India and Nepal. The rugs are available in four standard sizes with the option for custom-sizing.
Sonya Winner studio is GoodWeave-certified and committed to eliminating child labour and improving the working conditions for adult rug weavers.
