New York-based studio Calico Wallpaper recently introduced the Sunprints collection, a series of prints inspired by co-founders Rachel and Nick Cope’s wanderings through the city’s Chelsea Flower Market.
A breath of fresh air for interiors, the Sunprints wallpapers feature a pattern akin to precise botanical studies that have been rendered in free-flowing organic forms. When conceiving the collection, Rachel Cope started by arranging fresh-cut flowers on a canvas and then took influence from the startling beauty of cyanotype photography – a camera-free process where objects are placed on paper that has been treated with an iron salt solution, exposing it to UV light and then washing it with water.
The floral arrangements were captured by large-format digital photography and then digitally scanned and printed to produce the wonderous mural-like Sunprints that strike a unique balance between realism and abstraction. Every detail of each petal and leaf is preserved, and colour and textured are layered to lend an almost otherworldly effect.
When applied to the wall (in residential or commercial settings), the Sunprints collection from Calico is like entering an open field of wildflowers bathed in sunlight, with a vast spectrum of pigments lending a surreal impression.
The Sunprints collection is printed on Type II PVC-free, clay-coated vinyl paper and is available in eight colourways: Bluebell (various notes of blue), Charm (muted greys and bright blues), Fern (rich greens and dusky whites), Freesia (a dance of pinks and greens), Grain (neutral beige and white), Sepia (rusty yellows and brown), Serene (serene turquoises) and Sprout (vibrant green).
